Saturday 22nd May is going to be a day to remember.

We spent all day finishing the foundations to the new spec, 1.5 meters deep by 600mm wide – 7am to 5pm – the hottest day of the year so far!

Then at 5:10 – just 10 minutes after we finished for the day and almost finished all of the foundations, disaster! Two of the sides gave way and collapsed back into our nicely finished hole!

That was the last straw for me, I have well and truly thrown all of my toys out of the pram!

Time to call in the professionals….

To be continued!

oh Sh*t! 1

oh Sh*t! 2

oh Sh*t! – 2 again

oh Sh*t! 2 – dam it

oh Sh*t! 2 – Is that my shovel?

Is it me or is this world going mad!?!

My friendly building inspector has just informed me our foundations needs to be deeper, a lot deeper, very very very deep.. 2.7 meters kind of deep. Yes 2.7 meters, 2700 cm, 106 inchs, 8.8 feet… argh!

Apparently its because of the hedge and the clay.

It goes like this… the hedge or trees (conifers actually) can drain the water out of the ground making the clay crack which could cause long term subsidence. The trees could also grow to 200 foot! I could also win the lottery tonight or retire at the age of 32 (in 6 days time) BUT its never going to happen!

Or, this is good, wait for it… I can chop all the trees down, prove they are dead and then “only” dig 1.5 meters deep.

Oh and its all got to be 600cm wide now… because of the clay, not the trees this time, its clearly the clays fault.

Now I’ve gotten all that off my chest and have almost recovered from shock I’m going to ask politely for a second opinion.

PS: For the records, conifer roots do not thicken over a period of years they are not like trees with deciduous root systems.

Killer trees ahead!

More trees, they do need a trim…

Trees!

Okay, so who’s idea was this?

We thought it would be a “good idea” to build an extension to our house. At the time of agreeing this I didn’t realise I would be doing all the ground work!

Here are are few pictures from the first two weekends.

    • May 1st : Lifted patio slabs – with kango (snapped two bits) – over 180 slabs!
    • May 2nd: Lifted crappy pug and hardcore and all sorts of crap!
    • May 3rd: Levelled base, 9 inches deep
    • May 8th: Started digging main foundations
    • May 9th: Continued digging foundations, flooded foundations from soak-away!

    More to follow!

Slabs up, extension marked out – looks easy!

Hmm, bit of a mess in this corner

    All slabs taken away

Hmm, this looks suspect – what is that bar?

More prep work for the base

Piling up the rubble for the grab lorry!

    More rubble…

The whole base has to be 9 inches deep, apparently!

    Digging the base!

    More rubble…

At least my son helped me… for 5 minutes.

    “Who’s idea was this?!?”

Charle with Bob the Builder hat on – safety first!

Whooo Hooo – base is now 9 inches deep!

Hmm, suspect corner has sprung a leak!

Dads back to help digging the foundations… he helped with all the rest of it as well!

Tea break! Grace has popped out to check progress with cousin Max.

Morris is back to help out!

This is the second lot of rubble! First lot was taken during the week – cheers!

Ah, we have sprung a leak!

Ah ha! We have found the swimming pool! Yes Swimming Pool – f-ing builders filled it with rubble!

And now the bottom of the swimming pool.. metal backed!

    Thats all for now!

    I need a bud!
